Epson WorkForce WF-254 Review
User's Review
1) printing - print quality is very good, and perfect for home school use. This includes photos, and two sided printing.
2) scanning - set up to scan wirelessly to 3 different Macs. Scanning of photos, documents worked well. Was able to initiate scans from the printer touch screen and the computer. Worked with both the Flatbed and ADF. We don't have any specific quality requirements, but output was great for our use.
3) copying - copying is fast and quality is good. Copied single sided to single sided and single sided to double sided using ADF. Copying was fast and flawless. Lid is hinged so that it lifts up over thicker items and can handle books of an inch thickness with no problem.
4) set up - set up for use on 3 Macs (2 are 10.6.8, and one is 10.7.5). Set up was easy. I didn't use the disc that came with it, just downloaded from Epson. Wireless network set up was simple and straightforward.
5) AirPrint - if you have iPhones and iPads, AirPrint works great with zero set up!
6) no faxing here, so I have no comments on that.

To those who are looking for ink usage, I'm afraid I'm not very scientific on that front. We home school 2 children (8th and 10th grades) and this is the primary printer / copier. In other words, it gets a lot of use. My thoughts on ink usage are: better than the HP it replaced (an older Officejet 5500), better than the Canon we use mostly for photo's (iP6600D), but not quite as good as my Brother MFC-J6710DW. BUT, the print quality on the Epson is much better than on the Brother.

I was replacing my old inkjet printer, and the Epson's all had good reviews. I especially liked the duplex scanning and duplex printing, as well as the e-mail print functionality.
First I bought the 3520. After 2 days of use it started printing with black streaks on the back of each page, and the bypass feeder didn't work. Epson said I could mail it in, and they would mail me a refurbished model. I exchanged it through amazon instead. The new one worked for a few days, but on my 3rd or 4th scan, the scanner arm got jammed, and it started giving error messages on the screen all the time, and stopped printing. So I returned it, and figured the 3540 would be better. Also, I figured the two print trays would serve me well as I print a lot of photos.
The 3540 arrived, and I set it up, verified it could scan, etc. and all appeared to work. Tray 2 is for letter only, so I loaded letter in tray 2. I then put 4X6 photo paper in tray 1. In the printer remote print settings (on the printer) I told it to use Tray 2 as the default. When I set up the Epson Connect e-mail Print, I told it to print Photos to tray 1, and documents to tray 2 (I could only do one at a time). I thought this was going to be the perfect printer. Then the first time I tried to use Epson connect print, set to documents in Tray 2, it printed the tickets on the 4X6 photo paper in tray 1, despite being set to tray 2. In fact the setup process alone printed 3 letter sheets on the photo paper wasting my photo paper and spraying ink inside the printer. I tried the phone print, and it did print to the photo paper, but the quality was horrible. It was much worse than my 3 year old Brother which was $79 new, printing the same photo from the same phone. Then when I tried printing a webpage from my phone, it yet again printed it on photo paper, despite begin set to tray 2. Even the copy machine would copy onto photo paper in tray 1, when selecting Tray 2. When I selected tray 1 (Just to see if it was programmed backwards) it still printed to Tray 1. The only way I could ever print to tray 2, was using windows and selecting tray 2 just before printing.
I was so sick of returning printers I decided to let it go and put letter in both trays. I would just load photo paper as needed. After a few days, the printer kept "Not Responding." It would appear on the network, and show up, but would not respond to any print requests. Turning it off and on didn't always solve this the first time. This became routine, every time I needed to print, I had to turn it off, back on, wait, and if it still didn't print, I had to repeat. Finally after a week, it started miss feeding. It would print the top third of the page on 1 sheet, and the bottom two thirds on another. I also tried scanning documents through the feeder, and it would beep and tell me I must place them on the glass. So much for having a sheet feeder. I now have to scan 1 page at a time on the glass. Also noticed this morning, after printing a total of 32 text pages, and 1 4X6 photograph, that the black ink cartridge is only half full.
I am so shocked that I would get 3 Epson products in a row, and that all three would have problems from the start and all become useless within a week. This cannot be a consistence, this is simply a bad product. And I am going to be returning it and finding another brand.
I was curious why these Epsons had such good reviews on Amazon, and I noticed that most of the 4 and 5 star reviews said they were through green vine. I looked into it and these are people who get free products in return for writing reviews. Most of the "Amazon Verified Buyer" reviews are similar to mine. I hope any one considering this printer reads the real reviews, rather than the bribery reviews. Stay away from this printer.
